How to Travel in Europe

When we vacationed in Europe, we travelled by train on a Eurail pass – and my husband was a nightmare to tour with! Don’t get me wrong, he loves a vacation, but he doesn’t like the practicalities of travelling. He’s particular about packing his clothes , so he gets annoyed having to pack and repack everything each morning when touring. But more important, he loathes sleeping in a strange room: he worries about cleanliness and dislikes strange places.

To my surprise, I’ve discovered there are lots of people just like my hubby, reluctant to go on vacation because they get stressed by the upheaval or have trouble sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings.

There is a solution: take your home with you!

Campervans have come a long way in recent years. The internal fitout is luxurious, with all kinds of clever notions to maximise comfort and storage space. If you want space and luxury, you can hire an enormous Winnebago – but if you’re nervous about driving a behemoth, there are plenty of smaller models which might be cramped for people with kids, but are plenty big enough for a couple.

If you’re thinking of a European holiday, there are several companies which will hire you a van, fully kitted out, when you arrive – or they can even sell you a campervan, which they buy back at a guaranteed rate at the end of your vacation. That option can work out much more economical if you’re planning a long trip.

There’s no need to be anxious about driving on the wrong side of the road. With the steering wheel on the other side of the vehicle, too, it doesn’t feel as strange as you might expect, and you’ll soon get used to it.

As for where you can stop –Europe has a great range of campsites and many of them are very impressive – more like a resort than a camp site!

The great thing is that for your whole holiday, you can unpack once and forget it – and sleep in the same bed for the entire holiday. Perfect!
