Costa del Sol hotels are perfect for relaxing in the sun and topping up your tan, but if you sometimes get bored of the same pool and beach spot every day then you might love the excitement of hiring an open-top car and touring the coastline.
The first Costa del Sol town to be developed for tourism in the 1960s was Torremolinos and this will be the first stop of your tour if you are flying into Malaga Airport. It gets packed in July and August with young people partying all night, so if you are looking for a bit of peace and quiet then avoid coming here then. Wander to the fishing village of La Carihuela to find local men sitting on their patios playing dominoes or dine at one of the little fish restaurants at El Bajondillo for excellent local food.
After heading west from Torremolinos, you will come to Marbella and Puerto Banus. You’ll be able to tell that there is a lot of money in the area by looking at the huge yachts and luxury cars. Don’t worry if you are on a budget, as there are plenty of cheap hotels nearby so save money on sleeping and use your budget on nights out and shopping.
If you want to continue heading west after you are finished in Marbella, you could stop off in Estepona, which has got some of the most fabulous beaches in Spain. Playa del Cristo is a small cove with a couple of beach bars and is a popular beach for couples wanting to enjoy a cold drink in the hot sun.
Your first calling point might be Nerja, if you head east from Malaga and explore the coast in that direction. Tourists looking at Costa del Sol hotels may not know that it is only a 45 minute drive from Malaga and the beaches are splendid. This is a great place for anyone who loves water-sports as there will be locals offering you the chance to water-ski, scuba-dive and sail on this clear, sparkling sea. Don’t forget to take your camera, as you’ll experience the backdrop of the Sierra de Almijara Mountains.
